Tube-forming Spittle-bug

Unidentified Machaerotidae

Description:

The Machaerotidae is a Family, of bugs, in the Superfamily Cercopoidea. In general, Cercopoids are called "Spittle-bugs" because the nymphs make and live in a froth mass either below or above ground. The Machaerotid nymphs, however, create a calcareous tube within which they live and produce foam only when they emerge from the tube to moult. So, they are known as Tube-forming Spittle-bugs. (paraphrased from Wikipedia's article)

Habitat:

This Tube-forming Spittle-bug was spotted in our backyard on a Blumea Camphor (Blumea balsamifera), locally known as Sambong. Plant identification from http://www.stuartxchange.com/Sambong.htm...
