A large shiny black ground beetle

Habitat:

Woodland, porch light

Notes:

I have seen several of these beetles at my night porch light and last summer I found one in the yard during the day.

Strange that you'd find them wandering around in the open. I find these guys all the time inside rotting logs, which is where they live. Beautiful shots! Love the detail.
