Australian Magpie

Gymnorhina tibicen

Description:

Magpies were introduced into New Zealand in the 1860s but have subsequently been accused of displacing native birds and are now treated as a pest species...Anyway, the birds have a very melodious call, and they make great parents (males can become really aggressive during the breeding season, against anyone who might approach their nest & extended territory). This bird was spotted at the Christchurch botanic gardens.
