Banded Tussock Moth

Halysidota tessellaris

Description:

Bright yellow, bristly caterpillar. Four long black lashes (two in front and to in back) and long white lashes (in front). Red head with white mouthparts. The caterpillars of this species can vary in color (gray, dirty tan, yellow-brown) and often have black heads.

Habitat:

Devil's Hole State Park, Niagara Falls, New York. Forest.

Notes:

This caterpillar was a mover! Crawling quickly on the top of a rock, it couldn't seem to figure out where to go and made it difficult for me to get any clear shots.
