Chestnut-backed sparrow lark

Eremopterix leucotis

Description:

Bird size of a sparrow, some 12 cm in length. Pictured here is male, easily recognizable - chestnut colored upperparts (back and wing covers), black body including head, except for white cheeks and ivory white bill. Female, (seen but was too fast to be taken on photo...), has a general appearance of a sparrow with chestnut wings.

Habitat:

Found throughout Sahel. Here observed in Biltine town, in Wadi Fira region of Chad. Semi arid region, Sahel vegetation, but fresh climate (when I was there - in April), mainly sandy and rocky bare land, with some acacia trees and shrubs.

Notes:

The bird pictured here was mixing with a mixed flock (sparrows, bunting and finches), which I observed during several hours at outskirts of town called Biltine, Wadi Fira region. The bird was not really part of a flock, it seemed that it kept coming and going, while other species were rather staying together. Anyway, I had a great time observing this flock, and shot around 250 photos.
