Ypthima stellera stellera
Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Ypthima stellera stellera Eschscholtz 1821. This butterfly is usually active, in our backyard in the mornings and late afternoons, but this one was very lively at around 2:00pm when this photo was taken. It flew off after just one picture.
Spotted in our backyard in an area which is usually planted with vegetables, but at this time of year is allowed to grow wild. It is thick with grasses, foliage and wild flowers. It might best be described as a tropical meadow.
