Eastern River Cooter

Pseudemys concinna concinna

Description:

We watched this large male turtle try to climb onto a floating log for at least 5-7 minutes. The log kept rolling so the turtle was unable to actually get on top of it. Eventually he gave up and swam off after a brief rest. Fourth image shows size difference with a Painted Turtle. Dark olive colored carapace. Yellow plastron. Head is dark with yellow striping.

Habitat:

Canal bordering the James River. Pony Pasture Park, Virginia.
