Robber Fly

Comantella sp.

Description:

About 1/2 inch (10-12 mm) in length, black, covered in dense hair.

Habitat:

Open fields, plains, prairies. This specimen was sitting on a curb near the very east end of Pikes Peak Ave. Nearby native habitat is severely degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

This is a cold-hardy robber fly that is most evident in late autumn. I saw another specimen around Thanksgiving day this year.
