Melanerpes carolinus
This red-bellied woodpecker breeds in southern Canada and the northeastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far west as Texas. It has a black-and-white barred back, white uppertail coverts, grayish white underparts, black chevrons on the lower flanks and undertail coverts, and barred central tail feathers. This is the male as it has the red continues onto the top of his head. The female does not.
We have a pair in the backyard.
