About the size of a Rock Pigeon, colored as shown. Females lack the pronounced facial markings and have a smaller "top knot."
Degraded Sonoran Desert habitat along a broad arroyo (dry riverbed). Trees include palo verde, mesquite, plus creosote bush, prickly-pear and cholla cacti.
This is a common bird, even in urban areas in Arizona.
