Description:

Very large wasp, blue-black in color. In most parts of its range, this species has orange wings - the "xanthic" morph. In other places, individuals have black wings - the "melanic" form shown here.

Habitat:

This one was resting in the foliage of a cottonwood tree on the shore of an artificial lake in Fort Lowell Park, Tucson, Arizona.
