Cicada (Brood IV)

Magicicada cassinii

Description:

A newly molted member of Brood IV, which are 17 Year Cicadas. This one got inside my house somehow, found near my backdoor. Male, if my understanding that only males sing, and this one was loud. Was able to safely pick him up and take him outside and peg him onto a tree. Kept the husk as a neat souvenir.

Habitat:

Cicadas burrow into the ground and sleep for 13 or 17 years, then come out in the summer months to mate, die off, and then go back to sleep.

Notes:

Due to the fact that I lack a camera aside from the one on my Droid smartphone, I couldn't get a good picture of his abdomen to show that he lacked golden stripes telling me this is indeed Magicada cassinii.
