Long-spurred violet

Viola calcarata

Description:

Also known as Mountain violet, this species is a herbaceous flowering perennial plant. It remains small, only the flowering stems emerging from neighboring grasses. Stem is naked, slightly curved; bearing a large flower, 5 to 6 cm in diagonal (on its longest side) of form typical for this gender. Flower can be of different shades of violet, blue, yellow or white; usually it has a quite pronounced yellow throat with violet veines radiating from it. The flower also bears an easily recognizable long spur - on the back side of its lower petal.

Habitat:

This is a higher altitude plant, growing on alpine meadows and pastures above 1500m. It is found all over Jura massif (pictured here) and Alps.

Notes:

Pics taken in Regional park "Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura".
