As its name suggests, it is often found on the faeces of large mammals, where it goes to breed. The adult males are bright golden-yellow with orange-yellow fur on the front legs, they have big red eyes and short black antennas. Females are a little duller in colour, with pronounced green-brown tinges, and no brightly coloured fur on the front legs. The males are generally larger than the females, up to 1 cm in length. The adults mainly prey on smaller insects, mostly other Diptera. They can also consume nectar and dung as additional sources of energy
