Eastern painted turtle

Chrysemys picta

Description:

Red bars on marginal scutes

Habitat:

Slow-moving shallow stream

Notes:

This was a "baby turtle" found in my drive way in May. According to my Audubon guide, hatchlings can overwinter in the nest. I have numerous snapping turtle nests each year, but this is the first painted turtle hatchling I have seen here.
