Pileated Woodpecker

Cryocopus pileatus

Description:

Large crow-sized bird, black with white on head and neck, and white wing patches. Both male and female have red crests and black mustaches but male has a wider red mustache above the thinner black mustache.

Habitat:

Woodland

Notes:

We have been watching a pair of Pileated woodpeckers ever since we moved here. We hear at least one of them almost every day. It's hard to catch them together. Their favorite food is carpenter ants, but I was able to attract them into the yard every day with chunky peanut butter.

Thank you Maria and Alice. Alice you wouldn't believe the great variety of birds that the chunky peanut butter attracts...........Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Hairy and Downy woodpeckers, Red-bellied woodpeckers, Brown Creepers, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Titmice, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Wrens, Crows.........and if there's any left after that, it brings in the flying squirrels at dusk.
