A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Vanessa virginiensis
The wingspan of this butterfly is about 4 cm in width. The underside of the wing has two eyespots separated by pale veins (the similarly-colored painted lady has four eyespots), a intermittent red stripe and a white stripe as shown. The top of the wing is mostly red with dark brown or blackish margins.
I photographed this insect in an old field full of grasses and goldenrod surrounded by suburban deciduous forest.
