Eastern Cottonwood tree

Populus deltoides

Description:

There were several of these cottonwood trees in the area. Many cottonwoods grow from 70 to 100 feet tall. It is also known as the poplar. It is a tall tree with a spreading crown and is named for its cotton-like seeds. Cottonwood trees have male and female flowers on separate trees. Cotton shed by female trees in June is often so abundant that it turns nearby lawns white. I had never seen a cottonwood before and the wind was blowing the seeds all around. It looked like it was snowing because there were so many floating in the air. A beautiful sight for sure.

Habitat:

Cuyahoga National Park, Streetsboro, Ohio
