Melanitis leda
Melanitis leda, the Common Evening Brown, is a common species of butterfly found flying at dusk. The flight of this species is erratic.
They are found in Africa, South Asia and South-east Asia extending to parts of Australia. Found in my garden in Tamil Nadu, India
right! that's where I find difficulty. Have to study the families and species more I guess, or rely on people like you to help me... thanks.
first you have to guess the family or if possible genus
then it's easy to find correct species in A to Z species page list

thanks Nuwan. I have been using http://ifoundbutterflies.org/, but how do you find the photos if you don't know the name? I couldn't find a page photos of the butterflies for identification, just pages for each individual speciman.
i have a local butterfly guide book. beside that i'm using websites like

http://flutters.org/
http://www.slbutterflies.lk/
thanks Nuwan. Have to know what you are looking for to ID some of these butterflies!
Thought this might be some sort of Ypthima, but I can't find one with the same markings. Most seem to have the large spot uppermost. Haven't seen this one in my garden before.
