Nocturnal Wasp

Provespa sp.

Description:

Approx 1.5 inch orange wasp that is seen at night. It is very attracted to lights, as we found out while trying to do some night spotting of animals with our torches. Locals told us that its sting is extremely painful, and the pain can last for a day or more. Thankfully, they don't seem very aggressive, as they were frequently running into us in their quest to reach the lights, and we suffered no stings.

Notes:

Seen along the Bukit Tapan road in the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia.
