Common Forest Looper Moth

Pseudocoremia sauavis

Description:

Medium sized Looper Moth (forewing length 14-20mm). Well camouflaged browns and greys with distinct wavy line pattern through the forewings. Striking green eyes and in the males, strongly feathered antennae.

Habitat:

Common endemic in New Zealand found in farmland, forests and overgrown gardens. The caterpillars eat leaves of various native hard woods as well as native and introduced pine species.

Notes:

This is one of 29 named Looper Moth endemic species in New Zealand. This one found on my house attracted by night lights and quite late in the season. Ref: Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand, Hoare and Ball
