Picoides pubeescens
Very similar to the Hairy Woodpecker is smaller and it's bill is proportionally smaller to it's head than the Hairy Woodpecker. Both have white under parts with black / markings on the upper body. Both males have bright red markings with the Downy's slightly more cap like.
Open areas of all types that have an association of open areas and trees.
