Falco sparverius
American kestrel main diet is large insects, but are also known to eat small mammals, small birds, and occasionally reptiles. In the second pic it is kiting, hovering in the air searching for prey.
Spotted at the Gulf State Park parking lot next to highway 182. American Kestrels typically like open areas that have adequate perches. In this case it was a parking lot and a highway sign.

Thanks much Neil.
That is a sweet spotting, Brian. A pocket-sized deadly bird. A fave :)
Thank you much Tukup.
Great shot Brian. Congrats on the nomination. Sparrow hawks may be small, but they are one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Maria. That's so funny because that is exactly what this one did. I must have chased about three times before it found its meal.
Congratulations on the shots; love behavioral photographs. And it's not easy to get a close-up of kestrels in my experience. This past week, I played tag with one who kept moving away whenever I got just a little close!
Thank you Ashley for the nomination.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
