Anas strepera
The male Gadwall has a fine pattern of gray, black and brown. They have a large black patch on their rear. Their heads are large and squarish with a steep forehead. They are similar in size to a Mallard.
Preening in a pond with several Mallards at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.
Several different duck species in this one unfrozen pond.
