ground-nesting bee

Description:

A solid black bee species that excavates an underground nest/hive. Single bees fly into the hole which resembles a drilled out hole. The bees often spend only a brief time in the hole.

Habitat:

Holes found in sandy, sparsely vegetated ground located in a large yard near a disturbed patch of remnant lowland tropical forest.

Notes:

Camera just not fast enough to freeze the motion of the bee. The brighter photos used flash during daylight.
