Caryota mitis
Fishtail palms, so named from the shape of their leaves, are monocarpic, dying after blooming once. The only wild Fishtail palm in Singapore is Caryota mitis, the Burmese fishtail palm/clustered fishtail palm (see notes).
These adjacent palms were found along the rainforest boardwalk in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The area is a 6.2 ha remnant of primary rainforest.
A Checklist of the Total Vascular Plant Flora of Singapore: Native, Naturalised and Cultivated Species by K. Y. Chong, H. T. W. Tan and R. T. Corlett lists Caryota mitis as the only "wild" fishtail palm in Singapore. See last photo: http://flowersinsingapore.blogspot.com/s... and http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Caryota_mi...
