Wool Sower

Callirhytis seminator

Description:

This is becoming one of my favorite wasp galls. Round, whitish and fuzzy with pink/red spots. This is the home of the larva of a very tiny wasp. When the wasp larva hatches from its egg on the stem of the oak tree, the tree produces the gall in response to the larva's saliva. The gall forms a protective house for the wasp larva until it is ready to become an adult.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Pocahontas State Park, Virginia.
