Imperial Blue

Jalmenus evagoras

Description:

About 35mm long; white head and thorax; black eyes; underneath of wings cream with broken bands of black; trailing tips include orange with black and white tails. The little tails flailed around in the very slightest breeze.

Habitat:

At margin of public sports park, resting on low shrub which might have been callistemon or leptospermum or maleleuca... ?

Notes:

This butterfly closes its wings instantly when landing so shots of upper surface of wings are hard to get. I'm confident of Jalmenus but which one? Yet to search properly.... thinking of going with Jalmenus pseudictinus Kerr & Macqueen, 1967 - Macqueen's Hairstreak http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au... Thanks martinl for proper ID

Great spot and photos Argy. I'm not much help with the ID, I had a look at http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au... but I can't see one that I'd be confident to name as a match. Good luck! ; )
