Sunflower Maggot, female

Strauzia longipennis

Description:

Female. Second photo shows the fly on a sunflower stem, but it is not clear whether she's ovipositing. She was definitely attracted to the sunflower and kept flying back whenever she was disturbed. Third photo was taken in a different part of the garden and may show a different individual.

Habitat:

Sunflowers in a communal garden

Notes:

S. longipennis, a pest of sunflowers, is native to North America. It was first observed in Berlin in 2008 and is now established in both Berlin and Brandenburg, but not in other parts of the country.
