Picoides pubescens
The smallest North American woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, the Downy Woodpecker is a black and white bird. The males have a red cap on the back of their heads. They can easily be mistaken for Picoides villosus, the Hairy Woodpecker, a much larger relative.
Mixed deciduous/coniferous forests, base of the Catskills.
