Willie Wagtails

Rhipidura leucophrys

Notes:

This adult Willie Wagtail and its two youngsters have been hanging around in our yard the last couple of days. This morning the adult was feeding the youngsters (who were squabbling over the food) on the roof of our garden shed. They are very energetic birds and great to watch; it's like watching a melodrama being played out. Willie Wagtails are insectivorous, and are the largest of the Australian fantails. They usually pair for life and raise their young together. In the family pictured here I have only ever seen the youngsters with one adult, but it's possible that there are actually two parents who are 'tag-teaming' with the feeding and I just can't tell them apart.

They are great, aren't they? They always look so cheerful.

I love watching these guys owing to the behavior hinted at in their common name.

Thanks Ava! Sometimes I wish I had more than six shots to play with... I took about 70 pics of these three! : )
