Eastern Ringed Xenica

Geitoneura acantha ocrea

Description:

35mm. Rapidly closes wings upon landing. Yellow and black markings on underwings including 3 visible 'eyes' or rings - 2 on the hindwing and one visible near the tip of the forewing. Underwing markings very strong. Topwing colour was very rich dark orange with some markings that were indeterminate as they were only seen in flight. Top markings seemed much less complex than under.

Habitat:

Dense natural regrowth area at dam wall (including some introduced species). This specimen was found on tall grass blades.

Notes:

Nymphalidae (the browns) http://www.natureofgippsland.org/copperm... This species is represented in other states by other species names but which are visually very similar.... ocrea in Victoria and South Australia. http://sabutterflies.org.au/nymp/acantha...
