Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Description:

During breeding season this grebe has black head with brown tufts behind the eyes, red neck and red eyes. One of the smaller grebes, this one resembles Eared Grebe in winter plumage except for some small differences. The pattern of the face and next looks more like the Western Grebe. It also has a more subtle crest, and a straight black bill with white.

Habitat:

Breeds in shallow freshwater ponds and marshes and winters in on the coastline, lagoons and bay waters.

Notes:

I was shooting pictures of the winter birds in the area and as soon as some of them saw me would turn and swim away. I had to sneak up on some in cover of trees. This one kept diving and moving. This was the only shot I got of it.
