Meadow Spittlebug

Philaenus spumarius

Description:

Small, stout, jumping insect that is related to Leafhoppers and Planthoppers but in a different Family. Nymphs build nests of bubbles that look like spittle (well, technically it is bug spittle) on stems of plants or sometimes in grass. Comes in a wide variety of color and pattern variations.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden

Notes:

Can be crop damaging. Same insect in both photos. My camera did something weird with the color.
