Red-Tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo Jamaicensis) is a large hawk, and is one of America’s common raptors. Its height is 19 inches, and its wingspan is 49 inches. One way to identify a Red-Tailed Hawk is its brick-colored tail. You will most likely find them in open areas but there’s a chance you’ll find them in mountains and rain forests. Its diet consists of Ground squirrels, mice, rabbits, reptiles and other prey. You can tell it’s breeding because it does acrobatics in the air. The first Red-Tailed Hawk studied was in Jamaica. Its nicknames are Buzzard Hawk, and Red Hawk.

Habitat:

You will most likely find them in open areas but there’s a chance you’ll find them in mountains and rain forests. The Red-Tailed Hawk's range is throughout North America.
