Ruffed Grouse

Description:

16-19 inches. A brown chicken-like bird with fan-shaped, blackbanded tail and black "ruffs" on the sides of the neck.

Habitat:

Deciduous forests, especially those with scattered clearings; abandonded farmlands and overgrown pastures.

Notes:

In Vermont, the Ruffled Grouse was reintroduced in the Northeast Kingdom and it is thriving.
