In the primary image the Rotifer is in its extended state (swimming); in the second image it is contracted into its defensive position.
Found in a growth of Foliose Lichen on a tree in rural SW Pennsylvania
The scale bar in the images is 100 microns, approximately the width of a human hair.

I agree. I wonder if it has anything to do with our cold winters.
This one looks somewhat deflated ?
