Prairie Tree Cricket

Oecanthus argentinus

Description:

Male specimen. Front wings highly modified for sound production and broadcast. Hind wings used in flight are rolled up at rest. Frequently mistaken for lacewings.

Habitat:

Edge of weedy field in vacant area.

Notes:

Tree crickets may sing in broad daylight as well as at night. ID to species is tentative. Need to see front of first two antennal segments to be certain; but, habitat is telling, too.
