Widow Skimmer, immature male

Libellula luctuosa

Description:

A big showy skimmer with dark wing bases. Young males look like females except for the dark wing tips. As they mature the gold on the abdomen fades under heavy pruinosity.

Habitat:

Lakes, ponds, and pools in slow streams of all kinds with mud bottoms and usually heavy vegetation in open and wooded habitats.

Notes:

I spotted this young male in my garden. I had him labeled as a female until just recently when I learned that young males look similar to females.
