Green Anole (Carolina Anole)

Anolis carolinensis

Description:

Small green lizard found common in the US. The Green Anole, also called Carolina Anole and American Chameleon, is typically green in coloration, but will often be found brown or even black. The ability to change color is sometimes an indication of stress on the lizard, but most cases when it is cold it will get darker in order to absorb more heat from the sun. The only similar species in most parts of the southern US is the invasive Brown Anole. These have a white line running down their dewlap and is clearly visible during displays, or just looking under their chin to confirm. There is also differences in snout length, scale counts, and other areas that are not as easy to confirm
