Gavia immer
28-36 inches. Goose-sized. Heavy, long-bodied water bird with thick pointed bill held horizontally, In summer, head and neck black with white collar; back black with white spots. In winter, crown, hind neck, and upper parts grayish. When swimming it rides low in the water. Feet are way back on their body.
Forested lakes; oceans and bays in winter.
Loved on Great Lake Averill Lake. They travel on land with difficulty.
