White-crowned sparrow (juvenile)

Description:

A medium-sized songbird that is native to North America. Adults are easily recognized with black and white stripes on their heads. Young birds are streaked overall until August when they take on a juvenile plumage similar to the adult; they have brown and tan head stripes rather than black and white, which they keep until the spring.

Habitat:

Spotted at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge.
