Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Description:

Medium-sized woodpecker. Black and white with a white back, white belly; males have small red spot at back of the head. Black-and-white barred wings. White supercilium; black auricular stripe;white submoustachial stripe; black malar stripe. Separated from similar Downy by larger size, longer bill in proportion to the head, and lack of black bars on the outer tail feathers.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest with mature trees, becoming more coniferous towards a stream.

Notes:

This female was very friendly, allowing close approach for photos. There were about 6 females and only 2 males in the vicinity.
