As soon as we see these in our garden we cut the down and burn them, otherwise they will destroy the trees. Our neighbours don't bother and they have already had two trees come crashing down. The caterpillars strip whole branches bare whereupon the die and later break off. The caterpillars are also very dangerous for children and pets in their final stage.
