Flat Huntsman Spider

Delena cancerides

Description:

Native to Australia but has been introduced to New Zealand and is known as the Avondale spider. This species of spider is considered harmless to humans. An unlike characteristic of the flat huntsman is that it is highly sociable and may even share prey with others. They are highly aggressive and cannibalistic towards members from other colonies. They hunt for food instead of spinning a web and are timid towards humans. Females grow larger than their male counterparts. Females can grow up to 25-32mm in length whereas males reach only up to 20-25mm.

Habitat:

Found all over Australia and in parts of New Zealand, mainly Avondale.
