White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

Description:

This is small bird but has a loud call. Only a little over 5" long with short neck and tail. Pointy bill and beady eyes. It has a wide black line from the top of the bill over the head and down and widens to the collar that wraps around half the neck. White face, chest and belly blending to a rusty colored under the tail. Back is blue-grey with grey and black on wing feathers. Talil is black and white that fans out when flies and lands.
These birds finds seeds and nuts and wedges them in bark of trees so they can use their pointy bills to crack them open.

Habitat:

Found in wooded areas with oak, beech or hickory. Some prefer trees with existing holes.

Notes:

They are numerous in our areas. I can stand at some oak trees and watch them appear and quickly move along branches of the trees.
