Description:

6 black bars on a pale background. Hawaiian population has an oblique black bar under the pectoral fin. Grows to 10 inches.

Habitat:

Common on protected rocky coastlines from the shallows down to 30 ft. Feed exclusively on fine filamentous algae. Sometimes seem with Hawaiian Gregory.

Notes:

Most widespread and abundant of Indo-Pacific surgeonfish. They are not territorial and have small unmarked scalpels, placing them at the bottom of the surgeonfish pecking order.
