Scarlet Avens

Geum coccineum

Description:

A striking plant about 35 cm. tall with scarlet flowers (photos 1-3). Flowers are followed by fluffy, 'sputnik like' seedpods (photos 4-5). Basal leaves with 2-3 pairs of leaflets and a much larger terminal kidney-shaped leaflet (6th photo).

Habitat:

Mountain pasture on the edge of deciduous forest.
