Buteo jamaicensis harlani
The Harlan's Hawk, is markedly different from all other Red-tails. In both color morphs, the plumage is blackish and white, lacking warm tones. The tail may be dusky, whitish, reddish or gray and can be longitudinally streaked, mottled, or barred. Shorter primaries result in wingtips that don't reach the tail in perched birds. This population may well be a separate species.

I finally got my Harlan's! I've been hunting for one for years! These pictures aren't the best but I hope to go back and find this little guy on a sunny day!

I happened to find him by chance! I had seen a dark morph RTH a couple weeks ago in th same area. She was big and had a beautiful chocolate color and red tail! I went back out looking for her and found this guy insteaad! I think this is the guy Andrea was talking about because it was in the same area. It was a crappy gray day, butI had to get pictures, you know how bad I've wanted to see a Harlan's! It's probably the closest thing I have to a "life bird"!
Excuse me????? You went without me????????? ;-) He's beautiful! Doesn't look like you had to go far...where did you find him?? Great series, Emily! I hope you (we) can find him again!
