European Garden Spiders

Araneus diadematus

Description:

Small (~ 5 mm body length, ~ 1 cm overall) golden brown spiders with longitudinally symmetrical brown dorsal stripes and white ventral "+" on abdomen and brown bands on legs.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest suburban area.

Notes:

Spotted along a street, beside and behind a house, in their webs. They are quite numerous locally. Attempts to image the spiders and their complete webs were not entirely successful. The spiders in those images appear as glowing and out of focus, when they can be discerned at all.
